From the Commissioner
From the Commissioner:
"Thank you to those of you who have offered to support the Commissioners reference groups. The groups include a number of parents and members of the wider school community that will be supported by staff. I am also seeking input and attendance by some Ministry of Education officials to add those wider policy views too. They will, I hope be able to contribute to the Priority Target Group discussions.
The meetings for the reference groups are scheduled as follows:
1. Marketing and Communications/Community Development (combined due to some people doubling up for both) - 14 November, 6pm
3. Priority Target Groups - 15 November, 6pm
4. Special Character - 15 November, 7pm
The members of those groups will be contributing their ideas to the final components of the Commissioners Action Plan that will be released shortly thereafter."
Message from Mr Strong...
Many thanks for attending the community meeting held last Thursday evening. It was encouraging to see that so many parents and staff are committed to OLV.
For those of you who were unable to attend the information that was discussed is outlined in the first three reports that can be downloaded here
At this meeting there were questions asked as to the process the Education Review Office adheres to. This process can be found here
We are establishing four reference groups in order to help address the actions arising from the Action plan. For those of you who wish to offer your skills and experience by participating in one of these groups please email the office here
The reference groups are:
Message from Mr Strong - Decile Review
I have previously briefed the school community on the Ministry of Educations decile rating of OLV. The Ministry of Education has provided us with an opportunity to have our decile rating reviewed. Currently our decile rating is 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. I would ask that you contribute to this exercise as not doing so may negatively impact the funding OLV is provided with. I am aware that the previous decile review exercise was viewed with a degree of suspicion. That suspicion was unfortunately misplaced and the resulting low response rate to the Ministry of Educations survey resulted in the rating possibly being higher than it might have been that may have resulted in OLV receiving less funding than it might have.
From the Commissioner Re: Family Contribution
From the Commissioner Re: Family Contribution
I have reviewed a significant amount of correspondence on this matter, much of which is dated early 2011. I have also reviewed the decisions taken by the former Board of Trustees and external advice they sought in relation to this matter. As has been outlined to parents, the Inland Revenue Department has advised OLV that schools are allowed to collect “fees for the general benefit of the school” which allow tax deductibility. When fees are itemized, tax deductibility is forfeited.
